Lack Of Innovation : Danger Danger For Boardrooms

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 12:35 AM

There's something in the wind - or rather, the problem is, there isn't - and that something is 'innovation.'

Of particular importance to technology companies perhaps, but actually I think  a concern for all business, regardless of sector.

Boardrooms everywhere should have it highly placed on their agenda, and in the UK it doesn't look as if many of them are paying attention. This came up recently when I was talking to Michael Jackson, a former cha...

Sex & Power Two Years After Lord Davies' Report

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Today , February 24th, marks two years exactly since the release of the report by Lord Davies on the lack of women in the UK's plc boardrooms.

There has been much discussion and open debate in that time and some progress has been made on the numbers of women non-executive directors. For a look at speed and progress to date, see my piece in the FT 'Women and the Workplace' special report  out last Thursday. It had to be limited to 1000 words, which concentrated th...

'Women & Men' In Business Spotlight: Mining Plc

Posted on February 17, 2013 at 7:35 PM

XStrata, the FTSE 100 mining plc, has apparently responded to a letter from the UK's Business Secretary Vince Cable to remaining plcs with all-male boards suggesting they get on with changing that - it says it has a plan.

Phew. Judging by The Mail story in the link above, it's soon to be a case of 'and the...

All you want for Christmas ? I continue the report on positive thinking regarding women and the boardroom :

Here is the blog in The Guardian which announced the database of 8,000 'global and board ready women' put together by the European Business Schools/Women On Boards task force aided by LinkedIn and the Financial Times Non-Executive Director's Club. No more e...

Changing Perceptions, Changing The World

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM

It feels as if there is finally a breakhtrough towards fresh thinking for the boardrooms of UK plc. Here's a roundup.

Amid the Christmas parties, a few days ago there was a panel event hosted by Lord Davies of Abersoch who conducted the initial review of the under-representation of women in the boardroom almost two years ago (around which this blog was launched). Sadly I missed the event, and the discussion.

But the survey  done on the spot by

US Election 2012 : A WakeUp Call to UK plc

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 7:35 PM

It's the demographics, stupid.

President Obama's victory in the United States is to be hailed at the very least because America - and therefore by implication the rest of the world - did not take a step backwards. Let's assume for now it means that there is a glimmer of recognition that the world is no longer only white and male. In fact, here's a quote fro...
