Are investors in UK plc still waiting for permission to speak out on gender diversity in the boardroom?
To be fair, there have been a few ructions - and a lot of cheerleading by the UK Business Secretary, Vince Cable, but even so - it feels as if it is a potentially dangerous ie slightly 'taboo' subject.
Enough noise was made about 'all-male' boards to shame FTSE100 mining companyRead Full Post »

Since I first launched this blog in February 2011 (around the time that Lord Davies launched his review on the under-representation of women in the UK's boardrooms) I like to think it has championed the need for true diversity in the UK's boardrooms for better corporate governance and better business.
Before the Davies Review - In late 2010 - I spoke to many women for a series of features for the FT Non-Executive Director Club website. These were aspirant non-executive...Read Full Post »

'Above all, women want to have their voices heard, to be respected and to progress based on merit...it's disconcerting to learn that the most difficult career challenge they have faced is the non-supportive culture of the workplace.'
Who is speaking above? Dame Barbara Stocking DBE, president ofRead Full Post »

As luck would have it, my long scheduled interview last week with Lord Davies turned out to have perfect timing.
At the end he imparted some news regarding very welcome changes to the board of Chime, the media plc of which he is chairman. It was maligned in this blog quite recently for having no women on its board despite having Lord Davies - a public champion of women - as chairman.
Chime has made a series of announcements very recently.Read Full Post »

Warning: serious cynicism ahead.
Either we have a real communication problem in the UK around conveying the availability of 'qualified women' for non-executive positions in the boardrooms of our plcs....
OR the reason we are advancing at such a slow pace is that, far from demonstrating the 'sisterhood' in support, the issue of women on boards has become horribly splintered into different groups. Some of these overlap by membership, some are very 'excl...Read Full Post »

I have new insight into what it is like to be Vince Cable, UK Business Secretary, trying to bring about what is considered in the UK to be 'seismic change' when it comes to the progression of women in business - on boards as non-executive directors, and as part of an executive team.
I have to say I do not envy him.
At the very start of a roundtable discussion this afternoon with members of the business community- one of many held by the Department of ...Read Full Post »

I mulled giving a more considered response here to the man who ‘engaged’ me on Twitter with his ‘evidence’ that having more women on plc boards demonstrably decreases financial performance….but NAH. I’m above that. Besides, he ruined my Sunday evening.
Also, I have never been called part of the ‘loony Left’ before. Chuffed. Do take a look at the exchange though, if you’re willing to quick scroll through the feed – a...Read Full Post »

Oh, to be a paid lobbyist. If you are merely an opinionated campaigner using social media - well, you just don't know who saw it on Twitter and who didn't - so if important- and urgent - you find the time and another way to say it.
If interested in the diversity/women in the boardroom debate, have a listen of the recent BBC programme 'Any Questions?'
Two people caught my attention -Read Full Post »

Urgent action needs to be taken by the UK's corporate world to stem the leaking talent pipeline that could hinder the progress of economic growth.
A reminder- which shouldn't be needed - today from the CIPD .
Its report- entitled Inspiring Female Entrepreneurs. (the link has a case of August-itis at the moment but I'm sure you will find it on their website soon) sa...Read Full Post »

I was having a good conversation the other day with a clever headhunter whom I rate. Yes, they do exist and yes, it does happen. She has just about had enough of the 'conversation' on getting more women into the top echelons of British business.
She had lots of interesting things to tell me. Including this little fact: Chime Communications plc - the public relations, advertising and communications group specialising in creation, management and monitoring of brands and ...Read Full Post »
